Why family dinners?

Why family dinners? What makes family dinner so important? What is it about them that creates all that positive research? What are the benefits of having family dinners at home? Is having dinner together as a family really worth all the work it takes? If family dinners are so important, why do they feel like such a battle? How can I make having family dinners easier?

These are just a sampling of the questions that you grapple with as you face the daily grind of feeding your family while balancing the schedules and realities of a busy and frantic world. You may be thinking that family dinner is not for you or your family. But don’t think that way, family dinners are for everyone.

How family dinners change the world

So, why have family dinners? Because family dinner at home is what can change the world. When I say “the world,” what I really mean is your world. Your world which revolves around your children and your family and your home. And as your world changes and there is more connection and resilience in your home, your children grow up to be amazing adults who do change the world. I believe that family dinners at home are one of the simplest (note I said simplest, not easiest) things you can do to make a lasting impact on changing the world.

Establishing a nightly tradition of family dinners at home will not only provide healthy nourishment for your children’s bodies, it will also feed their souls. It can be a time to be loved, be seen, be heard, be championed and be taught. Not every dinner will be amazing, in fact, most will be very normal and some will be all out disastrous, but as you consistently gather each night together, you are adding one thread to what will become a strong tapestry of family over time.

So, why family dinners at home?

  • Because your kids will be one day older tomorrow than they are today.

  • Because everyone deserves a place each day to talk about the confusing, fun, hard or great things going on in their lives.

  • Because you all have to eat and drink anyway.

  • Because it’s a simple daily tradition that can be sustainable for decades (don’t worry, I’ll help).

  • Because you love your kids and spouse.

There are plenty of reasons and research that I’ll share to remind you why it’s worth it to have family dinners at home. But the main reason of why to have family dinners is to strengthen your family. The strong bonds and sweet relationships formed over hundreds of normal family dinners at home will last much longer than the sports teams, friends, money, grades or other distractions that are currently pulling your family apart at dinner time.

Ready to commit? I can’t wait – it’s going to be great!
